This Email Reminded Me Why I Teach

blog - she wakes up excited for math

There are moments as a teacher that stop you in your tracks—in the best way.

A parent shared with me that their child has been waking up excited for math each morning.
Yes… math. 👀✨

We’ve been working through mystery-style review activities—where students become detectives, suspects, solve clues, and work their way through challenges. It’s engaging, a little competitive, and something they’re genuinely looking forward to.

But the part that stuck with me the most?

Pride.

Not just finishing the work—but feeling proud of it. Proud of their progress. Proud of themselves.

And that’s the goal.

Because right now? Testing season is close.
The nerves are real. The pressure is real.

So instead of just reviewing standards…
we’re building something more important:

Confidence.
Ownership.
Belief in their ability to figure things out—even when it’s hard.

That’s what this season is about.

it's just EXCITEMENT in the mornings

This excitement? It didn’t just happen by accident.

It came from something we worked through together—The Case of the Melted Ice Cream -- which led into the students begging for another mystery. This week, we kept the momentum with a new mystery: The Case of the Missing Carnival Key.

A full class mystery.
Flipped learning style.
Clues to solve.
Suspects to analyze.
Math woven into every step.

And something shifted.

Students who were dragging a little? Leaned in.
Students who needed that extra push? Showed up differently.
Students who usually rush through? Slowed down and thought.

It wasn’t just about getting the right answers.

It was about being part of something.

Solving. Questioning. Figuring it out together.

And at this point in the year—when energy is low, testing is close, and motivation can be hit or miss—that matters more than ever.

Because the truth is…

This time of year is hard.

For students.
For teachers.
For everyone trying to just keep going.

And that’s exactly why I’ll always put in the extra effort to create something more.

Something engaging.
Something different.
Something that might be the reason a student logs in excited instead of overwhelmed.

final quote

Not everything has to be perfect.
But it has to be intentional.

And this?

This is why I keep building.
Keep creating.
Keep trying new ideas—even when I’m tired.

Because every once in a while, something clicks.

And that email?

It was the reminder I didn’t even know I needed.
And if the parent that sent it ever stumbles across this blog -
I hope you know how much your words truly meant to me.
And how much I really needed them.

That email was my reminder. My reassurance.
That it’s working.

That it matters.
And that the extra effort is always worth it.

one sip at a time ☕
